Robert Hampton "Dr. Of Guitar" (ASCAP)
A lifetime in music starts early. For Robert Hampton, it started at age three with his first guitar, then accelerated after he saw The Beatles and knew the touring life was for him. Decades later, Robert has amassed over 40 years of professional experience in the music world, both on the stage and behind the scenes.
His early career was a deep dive into the rock-and-roll lifestyle. He spent years in various bands, touring the United States and honing his craft in a demanding environment. This period taught him a crucial lesson that goes beyond licks and solos: “It was more about how well you play together and get along.” This focus on synergy and collective excellence is what Robert brings to every project, and what he ultimately found in his current band, the Texas-based female-fronted rock powerhouse, Troublemaker.
When Robert decided to settle down from the endless touring, he didn’t leave music—he just changed his focus. Drawing on his years of experience, he established a career as an expert luthier and technician, earning him the nickname “The Dr. of Guitar.” He now works as the guitar technician for Texas Music Emporium, using his deep understanding of instruments and what makes a band tick to help other musicians succeed.
In His Own Words (Mostly)
Here are a few choice “facts” from the Dr.
- He got his first guitar after trading in his rake on the mayonnaise farm where he was raised.
- He joined the ROTC in eighth grade for no reason at all. His wooden rifle was, naturally, soon swapped for a guitar.
- After retiring from touring, he transitioned to a life of taxable income, but not before amassing “the largest collection of spandex outfits” this side of the Mississippi.
“I still don’t like mayonnaise.”
Robert Hampton is the lead guitarist for Troublemaker, a band he considers a perfect fit—a collection of seasoned musicians with a tight, unique style and sound.
“To be the very best that we all could be. I think I found that with Troublemaker.”
